Bluenose Wines
Bluenose Wines, a name practically synonymous with zinfandel, is the baby of local celebrity wine guy Paul Brasset. It garners its rather unusual name from Paul’s native Nova Scotia, home of The Bluenosers. With lore about the cold temperatures, drinking sailors, blue uniform sleeves, wiped noses, blue bows, blue cannons- it is quite a story. Paul, being a humorous chap, came up with the Groucho Marx glasses- with the blue nose- and there you go. Paul is often seen sporting the glasses at tastings. On a serious note, even when wearing those wacky glasses, Paul has worked in the local wine business since 1980, fine-tuning and honing his experience, knowledge and talents. Most recently 2009 Bluenose Chardonnay pulled a Gold Medal at the Sonoma County Harvest Fair-versatility, adaptability, variety. He continues to hone his skills by acting as a consulting winemaker in addition to his daily duties at Bluenose.
Paul talks about his past with fondness- he has had a a number of what he calls, “Dream Jobs”- but he points to his appointment as personal wine adviser and winemaker to Sidney Frank of Grey Goose Vodka fame as a magical moment- and it has afforded him the opportunity to found Bluenose Wines and the ability to focus on producing his favorite wine: zinfandel. Bluenose only produces about 900 cases of wine each year- and what is produced is choice and rare- blue-blooded? Bluenose tastes at Hudson Street Wineries TR.
